The first Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) initiative between ESCI-UPF and ESB Reutlingen wrapped up this December.
Last week, second-year students of the International Contracting and Trade course had the privilege of attending a compelling lecture by Alessandro Ingarsia, the General Director of Co.Mark Spain.
As a seasoned expert in SME consultancy, with a particular focus on sales, marketing, digital, and innovation strategies, Alessandro Ingarsia, the General Director of Co.Mark Spain, brought a wealth of knowledge to the table, providing invaluable insights into the intricacies of exporting.
Ingarsia began his lecture by underscoring the importance of a well-defined export strategy. He emphasized that for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), exporting is not just an avenue for growth but a necessity in today’s globalized market, although they often lack the resources or time to do so.
According to Ingarsia, the first step for any SME looking to export is to conduct thorough market research. Understanding the target market’s cultural, economic, and regulatory landscape is crucial. He illustrated this point with case studies of successful SMEs that had meticulously planned their market entry, thereby avoiding costly pitfalls.
Then Ingarsia shared Co.Mark’s method for effective commercial development, which combines consultancy with an operative approach. The General Director highlighted the significance of digital tools and e-commerce platforms in reaching a global audience, suggesting that SMEs leverage these technologies to maximize their market reach.
Ingarsia also addressed the challenges SMEs face in the export process. He acknowledged that while the path to exporting can be fraught with regulatory and logistical complexities, these challenges are surmountable with the right strategy and support. At Co.Mark, they aid SMEs in overcoming these barriers by finding their own way to export and helping them deal with the whole process correctly.
One of the key takeaways from Ingarsia’s lecture was the role of innovation in export strategies. He stressed that innovation should not be limited to products but should also encompass business models and marketing strategies. By continuously innovating, SMEs can maintain a competitive edge in the international market.
In conclusion, Alessandro Ingarsia’s lecture was an enlightening experience for the ESCI-UPF students. His expertise and practical advice provided a comprehensive roadmap for students aspiring to venture into the export career. The session underscored the importance of strategic planning, continuous innovation, and leveraging digital tools in achieving export success.
