ECOtwins Second Annual Meeting

The UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change at ESCI-UPF participated in the second annual meeting of the ECOtwins project, held at the University of Copenhagen on July 18th and 19th.
La Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible busca reducir a la mitad el desperdicio de alimentos per cápita a nivel minorista y de consumo, así como disminuir las pérdidas de alimentos a lo largo de las cadenas de producción y suministro, incluyendo las pérdidas posteriores a la cosecha (objetivo ODS 12.3) (UN, 2015). Lograr este objetivo tendría implicaciones significativas en la lucha contra el cambio climático.
Según la FAO, la pérdida y el desperdicio de alimentos representan entre el 8 y el 10 por ciento de las emisiones globales de gases de efecto invernadero. Estos cambios impactan negativamente en los rendimientos de los cultivos, pueden reducir la calidad nutricional de los alimentos y causar interrupciones en la cadena de suministro (FAO, 2022).
Mientras tanto, según el informe Estado de la Alimentación y la Agricultura de la FAO aproximadamente el 14 por ciento de los alimentos en el mundo (con un valor de $400 mil millones al año) continúa perdiéndose después de ser cosechados y antes de llegar a las tiendas 8 (FAO, 2019).

Our researchers, Pere Fullana-i-Palmer and Ilija Sazdovski, collaborated with Harrison Tetteh, Rita Puig, and Mercè Balcells from the University of Lleida, and María Margallo and Ruben Aldaco from the University of Cantabria published a scientific research paper emphasizing the importance of extension of the shelf-life of products in Life Cycle Assessment.

Cristina Campos, researcher of the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change at ESCI-UPF, has been in Seville from 5th to 9th May as a speaker at the SETAC Europe Annual Meeting. In this article, she comments on the preliminary results of the poster and the CICEP research project, as well as her experience at the conference.
