The UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF, along with around 400 key players and decision-makers from the industry, is participating in the Sustainability In Packaging Europe conference in Barcelona. This three-day event is the only one in Europe with a programme designed in collaboration with the industry including the latest trends in technology, business, and regulations driving forward a circular economy within the supply chain.

From 12 to 14 November, this year’s conference will allow attendees to network, discover new solutions and create lasting partnerships with industry peers. As conference participants, from today until Thursday, researchers at the Chair will be introducing the new Recyclability Certificate at booth 33, together with its partner Dríade Soluciones Medioambientales. The Recyclability Certificate is self-declaration by means of which packaging manufacturing companies and/or packaging companies, will be able to identify the percentage of packaging material available for quality recycling. The attribution of this certificate is subject to an exhaustive assessment by researchers at the Chair to ensure compliance with the criterion set out in the recyclability label procedures.

Furthermore, on 14 November, the Chair will be also part of the Panel: Deposit return systems, design and effect on EPR. Given her experience as Environmental Analysis Coordinator of the Ariadna Project, the researcher at the Chair Alba Bala will explore whether Deposit Return Schemes are the only way for beverage producers to comply with their new legal obligations and what the impact of the introduction of DRS is on existing EPR systems.

About the conference

According to the organisers, one of the most important functions of packaging in the decade to 2020 will be increased sustainability, pushing towards sustainable practices for packaging. In this scenario, “circular economy will be a key influencer, focal point and primary benchmark for the packaging supply chain,” they highlight.

Aimed at addressing these future sustainability requirements, Smithers, a multinational provider of testing, consulting, information, and compliance services, created Sustainability in Packaging Europe, which is the only European packaging event designed to offer a 360 perspective on the key challenges and solutions the supply chain are faced with to evolve towards a circular economy.
