“How can artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and frontier technologies be used to accelerate progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals?” Leaders at the forefront of innovation have met at the AI Sustainable Development Summit 2019, held on September 28 in New York, to explore these questions.

The AI Sustainable Development Summit, organised by the data science consultancy New York Strategy, was founded by UN advisors and technologists who delivered the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Being the focal point of artificial intelligence and sustainable development,  it has welcomed panel discussions, keynote speeches, and hands-on practical workshops aimed at help world leaders and businesses identify challenges and innovate their solutions in order to achieve the 17 SDGs.

The Summit has brought together thought leaders and practitioners in AI and sustainable development, from the diplomatic bureaus to buzzing innovation centers of Silicon Valley to explore innovative solutions for the economic, social, and environmental challenges that encompass the SDGs. “Delegates have included global policy leaders visiting New York City, technologists and businesses leveraging AI for social impact, researchers from leading universities and think tanks, as well as investors funding solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges,” according to the organisers.

During the Summit, several innovation leaders have acknowledged the AI’s potential to make a real difference in achieving the 17 SDG, while stressing that its potential requires a scaling up of its uses for social good, such as using Big data analysis to facilitate precision medicine, using infrastructure and technology to improve the quality of life of citizens and enhance their interactions with the urban environment or creating a computer vision model for immediate use by first responders and the people who depend on them; among other examples on how to partner AI on achieving the SDGs,
